You could also need an MCHC blood test if you have celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). These diseases can cause inflammation of your intestinal walls, especially in the small intestine. That interferes with your body’s ability to absorb iron, lowering your MCHC.

Complete Blood Count (CBC)

They only consider gender and age, as reference ranges are solely adjusted for these two factors. A doctor must interpret individual lab results alongside a patient’s medical and surgical history, including established diseases, medications, supplements, hormonal treatments, and past lab values. For a CBC blood test, a healthcare provider takes a sample of your blood and sends it to a lab. The lab measures the amount of red blood cells, hemoglobin (the protein that carries oxygen in your red blood cells), white blood cells and platelets. Along with a CBC, your provider might order a peripheral blood smear, which gives them more information about how your blood cells look under a microscope. A mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) blood test measures the concentration of hemoglobin in your red blood cells.

Laboratory Reference Ranges: Therapeutic Drug Monitoring*

You might feel weak, tired, or short of breath when you exercise. Reference ranges for children who are still growing and developing are often very different than those for adults and may change significantly as they age. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), for instance, is an enzyme found in the cells that make bone, so its concentration in the body rises in proportion to new bone cell production. The reference values for ALP in children and adolescents, who should be growing healthy bones, are higher than they are for adults in whom high ALP levels may signify bone or liver disease. Understanding your hemoglobin levels is an important step toward achieving better health. Early detection of abnormalities allows you to collaborate with your healthcare provider to develop a customized treatment plan that meets your unique needs.

Your body needs iron to make hemoglobin, so having too little (or too much) hemoglobin in your red cells can be a sign of anemia or other problems. If you’ve ever wondered why women seem to struggle with low iron more often than men, biology offers a clear explanation. The difference isn’t just about size or muscle mass – it’s about blood loss. These are a way of comparing your test results with those considered normal or healthy for the general population. Most people can expect to have results that will fall within this range. If a result is outside this range – either higher or lower – it will generally be flagged as high with an (H) or low with an (L).This is to draw attention to your results. It does not indicate that you are unwell and may not mean anything in your personal situation.

Iron Deficiency Anemia

It’s usually included in a complete blood count, a blood test that’s often part of an annual physical. Your MCHC test results can show how much iron is in your red cells and how well the cells are able to carry oxygen. Too much or too little hemoglobin can be a sign of anemia or other health problems. The data given in Tables 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 provide general guidance to normal reference values that are applicable to most healthy adults and children, respectively, in industrialized countries.

How Is a Hemoglobin Levels Test Performed?

You may develop a small bruise where your provider inserted the needle. After drawing blood, your provider removes the needle and places a bandage on your arm. The following laboratory tests are used to diagnose human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which is the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Common tests used to determine the presence of antibodies to HIV include ELISA, Western blot, and Immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Lipid assessment or lipid profile includes total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides. Urea nitrogen is the nitrogen portion of urea, a substance formed in the liver through an enzymatic protein breakdown process.

Adult men typically maintain stable iron levels throughout adulthood. Their higher muscle mass (muscle contains iron) and absence of menstrual blood loss allows them to maintain higher ferritin stores. A number of factors affect haematological values in apparently healthy individuals. Variation in the analytic methods used may also affect the measurements. See American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) for an extensive list of laboratory test reference range values. Some results outside the range may resolve on their own, especially if they are on the border of the reference range.

In most cases, no special preparation is required for a hemoglobin blood test. However, if the test is part of a more comprehensive blood panel, your healthcare provider might advise fasting for a few hours beforehand. It’s important to inform your provider about any medications or supplements you are taking, as substances like iron supplements can affect the results. Staying well-hydrated and wearing loose-fitting clothing can also make the process more comfortable. Low hemoglobin levels combined with low serum ferritin (a marker of iron stores) confirm the diagnosis. The PPV of hemoglobin testing for iron deficiency anemia is high when paired with ferritin testing.

In this way, ranges quoted by labs will represent the values found in 95% of individuals in the chosen ‘reference’ group. In other words, even in a “normal” population, a test result will lie outside the reference range in 5% of cases (1 in 20). Reference ranges are determined using a cohort of individuals who are otherwise healthy in the context of an analyte being measured.

Thyroid studies are performed if a thyroid disorder is suspected.

A hemoglobin blood test is the primary diagnostic tool, with normal hemoglobin levels for adults typically ranging from 13.8–17.2 g/dL for men and 12.1–15.1 g/dL for women.

Your provider may recommend follow-up testing to find out if the result returns to within range or persists in being outside the range.

Venous blood is used as a specimen for complete blood count (CBC) which is a basic screening test that is frequently ordered to give an idea about the health of a patient.

Troponin is a regulatory protein found in striated muscle (myocardial and skeletal). Increased amounts of troponin are released into the bloodstream when an infarction causes damage to the myocardium. Troponin T and Troponin I start to rise after 4-6 hours and peaks at hours.

Understanding what it means if hemoglobin levels are high is essential for managing these risks effectively.

A urinalysis (UA), also known as routine and microscopy (R&M), is the physical, chemical, and microscopic examination of urine.

In other words, an abnormal results does not always equal disease.

The total cholesterol values were developed solely from the blood levels of men, who typically have lower HDL levels. Women were excluded from the tests conducted to create this blood panel. For women, I dispel the myth that high total cholesterol predicts heart disease by recommending a Cardiac Calcium Scan to check for plaque. If a woman has no plaque by the age of 50 and is taking estrogen, she is unlikely to develop plaque in the future. I still test them every 2-3 years to ensure that no metabolic changes have altered their risk, but I don’t put much faith in the unreliable cholesterol reference ranges for blood tests blood panel. The hemoglobin blood test is typically included as part of a complete blood count (CBC) test.

Your provider will also seek explanations for an abnormal result, such as those above. A key point your provider will address is how far out of the reference range is the result and if the results are repeatable. Factors affecting lab test resultsThere are a few reasons why a test result could fall outside of the established reference range despite the fact that you are in good health.

The ordinate shows the number that occurred at each reference point. The mean was 140 g/l; the reference ranges at 1SD, 2SD and 3SD are indicated. If the data fit a Gaussian distribution, when plotted as a frequency histogram the pattern shown in Figure 2.1z is obtained. Taking the mode and the calculated SD as reference points, a Gaussian curve is superimposed on the histogram. From this curve, practical reference limits can be determined even if the original histogram included outlying results from some subjects not belonging to the normal population.

For some tests, there is no single reference range that applies to everyone. By far, the most common factors that cause variations in reference values are age and/or sex. Hematocrit or packed cell volume (Hct, PCV, or crit) represents the percentage of the total blood volume that is made up of the red blood cell (RBC). Red blood cells or erythrocytes transport oxygen from the lungs to the bodily tissues.

Depending on where you have your test done, and what type of technology they use, the numbers could differ slightly.
